Kissinger at Israel Facing Tomorrow Conference: Timetable Needed to Combat Global Nuclear Threat

Kissinger at Israel Facing Tomorrow Conference:
Timetable Needed to Combat Global Nuclear Threat

By Ora Koren, Haaretz Correspondent

In an address at the "Facing Tomorrow" presidential conference in Jerusalem on Wednesday, former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger warned that the nuclear threat facing Israel is in fact a global danger, and urged the international community to forge a specific timetable to combat it.

Kissinger spoke before an audience of world leaders and dignitaries, saying that one of the major global shifts today is the rise of fundamentalism and radicalism. Compounded by the rise in nuclear weapon development, he said, this shift represents a historic turning point.

The Nobel Prize laureate added that the Iranian nuclear threat, besides threatening to destroy Israel, is also an existential threat to the world and must be addressed internationally. He explained that as long as a nation is capable of developing nuclear weapons in defiance of the United Nations Security Council and major world powers, then nuclear capability will consequently spread into many other nations. He stressed that when groups such as the Security Council voice objection to nuclear weapons development, they must do so with specific instructions and a defined timetable, otherwise, the situation will only deteriorate.

Kissinger also addressed the issue China's economic growth and the threat it poses to the U.S. hegemony on the world economy, saying that the issue must be addressed from the vantage point of future cooperation, rather than strategic competition. The world has changed, Kissinger said, and the theories of foreign relations that were valid in the past are now also changing. He cited the cooperation between the European nations within the framework of the European Union as an example of such successful cooperation.

The former secretary of state also addressed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, saying that it required both sides to be very brave. He added that it was impossible to move forward unless both sides know that a peace agreement is not the end of the road, but rather a starting point for future processes.

It is imperative to maintain the kind of cooperation that Shimon Peres is cultivating, he said.

In conclusion, Kissinger said that it was the joint interest of many world nations to prevent the rise of fundamentalism and to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Kissinger added that another international goal was for world nations to cooperate in efforts to advance the research into renewable energy sources and the protection of the environment while raising awareness for new technologies. He said that these were the challenges of tomorrow and that Israel could play an important role in facing them.

Speaking at the funeral service, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger made emotional comments about how Buckley had come to reconcile the gap between objective knowledge and religious faith:

'Over a decade ago,'' he [Kissinger] said, clearing his throat, ''Bill and I discussed the relationship of knowledge to faith. I surmised it required a special act of divine grace to make the leap from the intellectual to the spiritual. In a note, Bill demurred. No special epiphany was involved, he argued. There could be a spiritual and intellectual drift until, one day, the eyes opened and happiness followed ever after. Bill noted that he had seen that culmination in friends. He did not claim it for himself."

I was struck by these comments, both because of the speaker and the context. Secretary Kissinger, himself a man of powerful intellect and a German Jew whose parents fled the Holocaust, has clearly considered deep questions of God and religion and was touched by the loss of a long-time friend.

Mr. Joel Leyden

Hi,

Re: Facing Tomorrow Israel 60 Presidential Conference Celebrations Speech Statements by Shimon Perez to Pres. Bush

I was trying to find the transcript of the speech given by Shimon Perez, particularly to President Bush, and his very Diplomatic statement, something to the effect of 'tackling complex terrorism problems'; which was given during the Facing Tomorrow Israel 60 Presidential Conference Celebrations.

I did a search on your site (http://facingtomorrowisrael60conference.blogspot.com/), but was unable to find any reference to the speech or remarks.

I also happened to browse a little through your site, and was curious that the article Kissinger at Israel Facing Tomorrow Conference: Timetable Needed to Combat Global Nuclear Threat. I am aware of journalists and editors hyper paranoia -- I sometimes wonder if we may not call it the journalist's population conspiracy syndrome, or something to the effect -- about including information about the relevance between population policy issues, to resource wars, and terrorism. [See Media's Population Agenda & 'War on Terror' Outcome: "HOW and WHY Journalists Avoid the Population-Environment Connection", by Univ. of SW Louisiania]; and I imagine you are aware of Vice President George H. W. Bush's 1986 Task Force Study on Terrorism, which concluded that overpopulation is a root cause of terrorism. I thought you may also be interested in knowing that Mr. Kissinger, has also finally courageously confirmed the reality of the Mammoth Exponential Population Growth viz a viz Terrorism and Resource Wars issues, at the Republican National Convention. [See: Rep. Nat. Conv., MN: Kissinger "terrorism & Third World population explosion directly connected."]; which was also publicly clarified by Ted Koppel's 2000 Nightline Report from the CIA and Pentagon, on thier concerns about Overpopulations terrorism and resource war consequences, as a result of exponential population growth colliding with scarce and depleted resources; and the lack of will of politicians to address these root cause issues.

Anyway, sorry to bother, but would you know where I may get a copy of the transcript.

Kind Regards
